It was however the home side that took the lead by surprising the Piacenza defence with a try to Celerino. With the two point conversion by the ever reliable Peens the Roosters held a 6-0 lead.
The reaction of the visiting side was swift with the more experienced side from Piacenza, controlling possession they soon drew even with the Asti side before over taking them. In the end the XIII del Ducato scored six tries through Nouro Bance with a hat trick of tries, Muyodi, Ilinca and Rancati. With two conversions from Giacomo Alfonsi in difficult conditions.
There were positive signs from both sides in their opening match. The XIII del Ducato played a solid match and their experience showed through and will see them again one of the teams to beat.
The Roosters in their first official match showed a lot of aggression and sound defence, but a bit of inexperience in attack penalised them and this was reflected in the final result. Worthy of note was the young age of the Asti side, especially the fact that they had two 16 year old players play their first game who both had good games and they will undoubtedly be taken into consideration for the National Under 18 test match on the 6th July against the U18 Serbian national side.
As with the first pool match between the XIII da Bresa and XIII del Duomo from Milan and the match played in Asti, there are excellent signs of growth in the North West Italian pool, with matches being more competitive and exciting.
The next match in the championship is this Saturday 15 June in Piacenza, which will see all four teams from the North West pool play. 15.00 XIII del Ducato v XIII del Duomo then at 16.30 XIII da Bresa v Roosters from Asti.
