A second-half fight back from Hull Kingston Rovers gave them a deserved 35-28 victory over the Huddersfield Giants at MS3 Craven Park.
The Robins stormed into a 10-0 lead after tries from man of the match Travis Burns and Alex Brown but the found themselves 22-16 down at half time after two tries from Leroy Cudjoe and further scores from Joe Wardle Shaunt Lunt.
After a scoreless 20 minutes in the second half Craig Sandercock’s side stormed ahead with three tries in quick succession through Burns, Brown and Graeme Horne.
Con Mika put daylight between the two sides with a try of his own at 34-22 before Aaron Murphy scored for the Giants to set up a tense finish.
The Robins won the ball back after a knock on from Luke Robinson and Michael Dobson kicked a drop goal to add to his five conversions to seal a well fought win for the home side.
KR started the game strongly winning two penalties for holding down and a ball steal. From the second penalty the Robins played a set move and Dobson found Burns who found a gap to score next to the posts.
Before Huddersfield even had the chance to complete a set they found themselves 10-0 down after eight minutes. A knock on from Grix gave the home side the ball back in the Giants half and Horne found Lovegrove who played an offload to Brown who managed to beat Murphy to score in the corner.
The Giants had a penalty of their own after a knock-on from Liam Salter followed by a bad tackle by Burns. After working the ball right Robinson’s grubber kick behind KR’s defence bounced kindly for Cudjoe who took the ball over the line to score.
Another knock-on from the home side gave Huddersfield the ball on halfway. After testing the Robins’ defence on the right edge the Giants switched to the left and Danny Brough’s chip kick was batted down by Murphy to Wardle who managed to score in the corner. Brough kicked the conversion to level the scores at 10-10.
With their next attacking set the Giants took the lead for the first time in the game. Robinson made a break on his own 30 leaving him and Lunt against KR fullback Greg Eden. Robinson was left with a simply pass inside to Lunt who cruised to the line.
Just as KR looked to be building some attacking momentum with repeat sets on the Giants line Craig Hall threw a wayward pass which was picked up by Cudjoe who raced 70 metres to the line to put 12 points between the two teams.
KR enjoyed more possession as they settled the game down and were rewarded for their efforts in attack. After Rhys Lovegrove won a penalty for holding down Dobson and Burns exchanged kick passes into Horne who dove through a gap to score.
Both sides squandered chances in the opening exchanges of the second half until Burns finally broke the deadlock to score his second of the game. Hall and Eden made 50 metres between them and Hall won a penalty for holding down. After tapping the ball Dobson found Burns who stepped inside and managed to put the ball on the line despite being surrounded by four Giants players.
The home team scored with their next attacking set. Burns backed himself on the last tackle and burst through a huge gap in the middle of the park. He had Brown in support on the wing and kicked a grubber to his teammate. The ball bounced kindly and he managed to beat Murphy to finish a superb try. Dobson converted from the touchline to put the Robins six points ahead at 28-22.
KR were in the ascendancy and hammered home their advantage with their third try in five minutes. After a penalty for offside they worked the ball forward and Dobson played a short pass to Mika who managed to dive over the line next to the posts.
Huddersfield brought themselves back into the game after a superb try from Murphy. The Giants won a penalty for a ball steal and worked towards the Robins’ line. On the last tackle Brough floated a kick out to an unmarked Murphy on the left wing who took the ball and slide over the line to score. Brough converted from the touchline to set up a nervy finish as the Giants trailed by six.
The visitors gifted possession to Rovers when Robinson knocked-on on his own 10 metre line. Dobson elected to go for a drop goal on the second tackle and was successful giving the Robins a seven point cushion.
Despite a succession of penalties on KR’s line the Giants couldn’t break through and Sandercock’s side held out for a deserved victory against Super League’s second-placed side with a 35-28 win.
